Overseas Ministry: Snippets from Tan Yak Hwee in Tainan, Taiwan Summer 2020
By Tan Yak Hwee, ordained minister by PCS, currently teaching in Tainan Theological College
Aug 2020

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

TAINAN THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE. Time passes by so quickly... I have spent almost two years in Tainan, teaching at Tainan Theological College, Taiwan. It has been an eventful time, teaching courses that are not my area of specialization, such as Church History, Old Testament and Theology. Due the dire need of accredited lecturers recognized by the MOE, Taiwan, I was slotted to teach these required courses to the students in the programmes. The challenge was not only the content of the courses but also the medium of instruction, which is Chinese Mandarin. However, the students were and are very gracious towards my broken Chinese Mandarin.

Pictures speak a thousand words. So, I am including pictures with a brief note my life and ministry in Tainan.

Ya-yun, a dual-degree student doing MA Theology and MDiv. and I am supervising her thesis on shared leadership of Mary and Martha in the Gospel of Luke. Behind us is the college's chapel where we have morning prayers daily at 8am and the full worship service on Wednesday. And all in Taiwanese.

CHURCH (TICC). I worship and preach at TICC (Tainan International Community Church), an independent, non-denominational and non-affiliated group of 20-30 spiritual explorers and pilgrims. It meets at the social hall of Dongning Presbyterian Church in Tainan. TICC is one of the few English-speaking congregations in Tainan and it draws students from National Cheng Kung University and Chung Jung Christian University and of different nationalities (Americans, British, Filipinos, Indians, Indonesians, Japanese, Singaporeans, and Taiwanese).

COVID-19 PANDEMIC 2020. Taiwan shut its borders to visitors in mid-February. All institutions were to comply to the rigorous requirements from the Health Authorities and MOE, such as daily temperature taking, social distancing in classroom, wearing masks, disinfection etc. We are thankful that we did not have any lockdown in Taiwan and had college's graduation on 24 June 2020. Presently, we are having summer vacation and Fall term will begin in mid-September.

Prayer Requests:

  1. Pray for the students and faculty members as they juggle between lectures and minstry.
  2. Pray for members of TICC as they seek to follow Jesus faithfully in their universities and workplaces.
  3. Pray for me as I will teach Greek Intensive in August 2020, and in Chinese Mandarin. Poor students (and poor me, struggling with Chinese Mandarin).
