Participants of the round table session

The arts have always been one of the integral parts of church life, be it in the form of music (vocal and instrumental), dance or visual art. As more of our church members become involved and professionally trained in these areas, the Synod realised that there may be an opportunity to provide a platform for the Presbyterian Church in Singapore to interact, to be equipped and to share resources.

This vision was shared at the roundtable session held at True Way Presbyterian Church on the evening of 7 May 2014. Around 30 congregational representatives from both the English and Chinese Presbyteries were present to share their opinions on the proposed 'Worship and Performing Arts Institute. After an opening prayer by Rt Rev. Leow Khee Fatt, the attendees were then invited to share their views.

After an extended time of robust and candid sharing, a few common concerns emerged:

  • Need for a clear understanding of a reformed, Calvinistic worship model that is distinctively Presbyterian to be identified and communicated, be it over the pulpit or from an institutional point of view (existing seminaries, e.g. Asian Institute of Calvin Studies, or the proposed Worship and Performing Arts Institute).
  • Perceived role of the proposed Institute, acceptance and participation by various churches, especially in view that congregation members interested in such programs may already be heavily involved in church and may not have time to attend these programs.
  • Duplication of efforts by existing local Christian creative arts groups and institutes may cause doubt about the need to set up another institution.

Even though there was no decision regarding the proposed Institute at the end of the session, it provided a useful insight into the needs and feel among our sister churches. As more discussions and soul searching are under way, we invite all to pray with us for God's will to be revealed to us in this matter.
